Do Roach Traps Attract Roaches?

I have used many methods in the treatment and elimination of roaches. Just to go off on small tangent roaches aren’t attracted initially to filthy homes. They usually make their way in for water and shelter from the elements. If the home has leaky pipes or standing water and a food source… Jackpot! they found a good spot to be. Fixing and keeping these types of things maintained will help you not to attract these pests into your home.

So, do roach traps attract roaches? Yes, roach traps are created to bring out the roaches in close proximity to eliminate them, this does not mean that you’re going to be inviting new roaches, just the ones that are already around which is exactly what you want it to do.

Read this article because it will help you and many others to understand how to get rid of roaches for good.

How Do Roach Traps Work?

Roach traps can be used to attract and kill roaches that are inhabiting your living space.

The way it works is the bait inside the trap will lure roaches inside to eat the insecticide which the roach believes to be food for them.

Once the roaches have consumed their meal they will spread it to other roaches which causes them to get sick and eventually die.

Where Should I Put A Roach Trap?

When you place your traps you’ll want to put them where roaches are more commonly found

  • Behind Your Fridge
  • Near Or Behind Any Heated Electronic Device
  • Dishwasher
  • Refrigerator
  • Washing Machine
  • Ice Machines
  • Water Heaters
  • Under Kitchen Counters
  • In Kitchen Cupboards
  • Behind Stoves And Ovens

Make sure that when you place roach traps and glue boards that you don’t block any ends that could be potential openings for cockroaches to come into them.

If there is a film on the bottom of your roach trap you can peel it off and stick the traps on the sidewall of the inside of your cabinets as well.

Should I Use Only Roach Traps To Get Rid Of Roaches?

I have gone to homes where they only wanted roach traps and the outcome has never had success on its own.

When I return to these homes the customers are so fed up with their pest issue that they are ready to eliminate them by other means.

If your goal is to get rid of roaches completely I would use roach traps but I would use a gel bait, and liquid chemical to treat them as well.

How Does Roach Bait Work?

Similar to the roach traps the roach bait has an insecticide that attracts the roaches to eat it.

Roach gel bait will come in a 30-gram tube with a plunger and a nozzle that screws on to the end of it.

When you apply it do it in tiny dots so that it appeals more to the roaches and makes it more easily digestible.

Where Should I Put Roach Bait?

Roach bait should be placed where roaches are present. Roaches love to squeeze between cupboards, molding, in the rear vents of a stove, and on the backside of your refrigerator near the bottom where the vents are.

In bathrooms under cabinets and inside drawers is a good place for bait.

Can Roach Traps Make You Sick?

No, a trap cannot make you sick, nor can the bait or the spray.

Handle them with care (wearing gloves), place them in areas as directed on the package and all will be well.

If your child has directly eaten the bait, call poison control to go over any symptoms.

If you do end up getting a large infestation of roaches you can get sick from the defecation and urine they produce.

If you don’t get rid of them quickly it will make the air quality of your home poor and many roaches carry disease.

Can You Get Rid Of Roaches Without An Exterminator?

Yes, you can use professional-grade pest controls to get rid of your roach problems just as they do.

In most states, it is perfectly legal for you to purchase these pesticides, but only for personal use, and only on your home.

It is unlawful to use these pesticides on a friend’s home or any other home.

What Do Exterminators Do To Stop A Roach Problem?

Most exterminators have had years of practice and can assess what it would take to stop a particular roach issue.

An exterminator will do an initial inspection, after that based on their findings they will treat with Gel Bait, Bait Stations, A Knockdown Chemical, And A Growth Inhibitor Additive.

For large infestations, the exterminator may suggest that everyone leave the home for several hours if they opt to use a flushing agent a.k.a. bug bomb.

Once the treatment is done the exterminator will return in 2-4 weeks up to 3 more visits to eliminate the roaches for good.

Can You Eat Food That A Cockroach Has Been On?

Yes, you can but I wouldn’t suggest it, they are filthy disgusting creatures and you deserve better. It is very unsanitary to eat food that a roach has been on since they harbor disease. This is why sanitary practices should be strictly observed when you you are dealing with a roach problem.

How Can I Get Rid Of Roaches Fast?

It depends on how big the issue is if you have an infestation in can take 3-4 treatments over a 6-8 week span to eliminate the adults and their nymphs.

You can do your best to get on top of the issue by applying pest control and then to continue the process until you are no longer seeing them.

How Do You Find A Roach Nest?

The very best way to find a roach nest is to take a flashlight and look for brown spotting from defecation or shed skins these are a good indicator of a place where nesting can occur.

Common nest areas can be  behind your refrigerator, stove, or under sinks. This is undoubtedly the most common habitats for roaches.

Roaches have the ability to squeeze their bodies into some of the tightest micro cracks imaginable. So nests could also be behind walls and under moldings.

As roach infestation grow heavier and heavier nesting areas can expand and new areas will be explored by the roaches such as televisions, stereos, microwaves, alarm clocks, etc.

Where you are seeing them most will likely mean there is a nesting area real close by.

If you do not have an infestation and you are seeing roaches, you are probably in a shared living space i.e an apartment, hotel room, or condo and they could be coming from a neighboring unit.

What Kills Roaches And Their Eggs?

Adult roaches and nymphs can be killed by using Advion roach gel bait, this is an attractant that lures roaches in to eat and will eliminate them.

The eggs don’t really die, since they are not at a point in their lifecycle where chemical treatment can eliminate them .

So what you will do for this is you will use a contact killing spray called Temprid SC.

So like I mentioned above you can get rid of the adults and young nymphs but the eggs are another story.

So to help with this issue since we can’t get rid of the eggs we will use a growth regulator that will make it to where the next generation is unable to reproduce.

Temprid gets mixed into a 1-gallon spray can. If you want to get rid of the next generation you will want to use a growth regulator called Nygard.

Nygard should be mixed with the Temprid. This treatment alone after several applications will eliminate an infestation.

In fact you should be able to get rid of the problem by treating 3-6 times. Make sure you wait at least 2 weeks between treatments though.

I use all of these in a service to get rid of roach infestations and I have never lost a battle against roaches.

What To Do If You See A Cockroach in Your Apartment?

Apartments are just hard because you can spray your own stuff every month and still see roaches after the chemical wears off if nothing is done in the other units to get rid of their roach issues.

If you see a cockroach in your apartment call your apartment management as soon as possible, they could be coming into your home because they are coming from another unit.

You will not be able to handle this on your own the source must be found for resolution.

Also, if you do decide to purchase your own commercial chemical from a distributor, it is against federal law for you to use that chemical outside of your unit unless you are a commercial applicator.

Do Roaches Come Out More After Spraying?

Yes, if you see roaches after a spray they are attempting to retreat from the space to avoid their imminent death. This is a good sign of a job well done.

I have had infestations so bad that they fall from the ceiling on me after using CB- 80 (see the current price on domyown.com)  to flush out the infestation… This is so cringe-worthy because nothing is creepier than having physical contact with such a disgusting disease-infested roach.

Read the directions when using CB-80 it is a bug bomb and requires you to wear a respirator. But it works so dang good.

When you go to apply CB-80 go to the furthest point away from where you will exit and back your way out of all the rooms in your home. Spray as high as your arm will extend like you are spraying air freshener in a room and work your way out.

CB-80’s nozzle must be held down by you there is no locking mechanism on the trigger, there are 2 reasons for this the first one is safety it would be bad if you were in the home and

Make sure when using CB-80 that you turn your air conditioner off. Also, make sure no fans are pushing any air in the home. then treat your home with it. Lock the doors and leave.   For at least 4 hours. See the respirator I use personally here on my recommended products page.

Does Seeing One Roach Mean Infestation?

Cockroaches are not solo travelers, Infact cockroaches are prolific breeders. If you see a single cockroach it will not be long till you see many more.

Here Are My Favorite Chemicals To Use For Treating Cockroaches

If you buy all these items and the protective gear it takes to do the treatment, you will still come out cheaper than it would be if you paid an exterminator to do this for you.

Summary

Roach traps do attract roaches it is an intentional thing to get roaches out of your home and away from your food and water. If you want to tackle this on your own it is a very possible thing to accomplish. Make sure to read all labels and abide by the laws that are on them and you will be good.
