Can Mosquitoes Come Through Drains?

The Mosquito these little buggers are most likely to be an inhabitant of your home in any small dwelling with stagnant water, warmth, and darkness. They only need a little water to breed and they will do this quickly since their lifespan is not very long. In fact, they live their entire lives in about a month.

Mosquitoes will not die after they sting because they are not stinging they are sucking your blood for survival, they can fill up as many times as they can get away with until they are smacked down or they just die because it’s their time to go.

This is why mosquitoes are dangerous they are going to any human blood source since they are attracted to carbon dioxide and they can spread viruses.

So, can mosquitoes come through drains? No, a mosquito is not coming up through your drain but, it is probably living just under the surface of your drain.  It is dark and wet a perfect place for a female to lay her eggs around 300 of them to be exact so, you’ll want to be sure to clean your drain thoroughly to get rid of what might get ready to hatch.

Really the only way a mosquito could inhabit a drain would be like an old utility sink that is never used. Mosquitoes usually dwell where water does not flow.

In this post I’ll answer FAQs on unusual places you may find a mosquito habitat and after that, I’ll give you some solutions to care for the issues.

Can Mosquitoes Come Through The A/C Or Window Units?

Yes, they can but only if they have laid eggs inside of the ac unit and have begun to come out of it. They don’t fly through the cold air to get inside, they are attracted to what the ac provides. This happens when there is water present so when the ac leaks it provides an area for the eggs to become larvae. Mosquitoes do not like the cold, however, there are elements within the ac that make breeding possible with droplets of water and a heating coil.

Can Mosquitoes Breed Inside The House?

Yes, they absolutely can. They do not need much to survive but a bit of standing water, warmth and darkness. If you know that you may have a severe issue with mosquitoes in your home they could definitely be breeding within your home.

You would need to check for any areas in your home that have small water leaks, drains, under the sink, your air conditioner, standing basement water, bathrooms, kitchens hose area, etc… The female can lay up to 300 eggs in these areas so they will need to be cleaned thoroughly. Exact remedies will be at the bottom of this post.

Can Mosquitoes Come Through Window Screens?

Yes, if given the opportunity a sitting mosquito may enter the home through a hole looking for a food source. Prevention is easy on this one, just be sure to patch holes or replace screens as needed.

Can Mosquitoes Come Through Door Screens?

Sure, a mosquito can come through a door screen but they will not actively be trying to enter the home through your screen it will more than likely be a small hole or the attraction to food that might drive one in here and there if there is a large gathering around your entryway.

Can A Mosquito Bite Through Clothing?

Yes, they can and they will, I have personally had this issue with myself and my children. Those pests know when they have landed on a food source clothing will not deter them from a meal.

A mosquito labium is an outer skin that protects the proboscis. The proboscis is an incredible tool it has 6 needle extensions to it that are made for penetration, separation of tissue, and the suction of blood. Once the female mosquito finds a blood vessel to dig into she gets her fill of the blood then she leaves her saliva behind which can contain parasites that can cause illnesses.

So needless to say the female mosquito can penetrate through many types of fabric including denim.

How Are Mosquitoes Getting In My House?

Mosquitos can enter your home if there is any standing water near your home, gutters or even bushes that may be able to hold small water droplets. If close enough to your entryway they may start to trickle in.

  • Holes in screen
  • Stagnant water
  • Outside water leaks
  • Bushes

Any of these things can help a wandering mosquito get into your home. Check your entryways for attraction points and take care of them before the issue begins inside if you see an unusual amount of mosquitos in your home they may have begun to breed indoors.

How Many Times Will A Mosquito Bite You?

As many times as it can, but if you’re getting bitten a lot in a short period of time it’s probably not the same one, if the mosquito is full it will move on. A mosquito will not die after biting which is why they spread diseases like Malaria, Dengue Fever, Chikungunya, West Nile and Zika virus, they bite multiple people and this is how it spreads so quickly.

Where Do Mosquitoes Hide During The Day?

It depends on the species but most will be sleeping during the day in dark, quiet secluded areas in bushes, tall grass, holes, really anywhere until dusk then they will get out and start getting busy bothering people. Mosquitoes still may come out during the day if it has been a while since a blood meal or if where they are sleeping gets disrupted.

Where Do Mosquitoes Lay Eggs In The House?

Mosquitoes will lay eggs in a dark, warm damp place so if you have them check your drains. Especially ones in the basement or less frequently used areas that still have water in the area.

  • Under Sink
  • Basement Water
  • Leaking Air Conditioner
  • Shower/ Tub Drain
  • Water Heater Drains
  • Utility Sinks

Check these areas and then take care of them immediately to avoid repopulation.

Getting Rid Of Mosquitoes

Getting rid of mosquitoes can have its challenges but if you understand some of its habits this won’t be too difficult to get under control.

Mosquitoes are some of the laziest insects they can see us from far away and as they make their way to our direction they will stop and take several breaks on trees and bushes as they pursue a tasty meal.

  • Electric Insect lights and in the last couple of years, they have made them where they can fit on your exterior sconce lighting.
  • Another good option is citronella candles and torches. These work well at keeping mosquitoes away while they are lit, however, once the backyard party is over it won’t reduce the populations that are around you. If you like this option here is the citronella oil I recommend is called Firefly (see the current price on amazon.com).

In my personal opinion, the very best way to get rid of mosquitoes is to treat them with a liquid chemical to help lower adult populations and keep them from coming back for about a month.

The best way to do this is to purchase a mosquito machine and a bottle of chemical to spray all trees and bushes on your property. Make sure not to spray any foliage that blossoms or grows fruit or nuts. The mosquito machine I recommend is The Tomahawk Mist Duster (see the current price on amazon). After you have treated all foliage and sprayed under all decking and patio furniture, you will enjoy a mosquito-free environment.

This is the best option it is not the cheapest, but it is the best.

If you want a cheaper option I recommend purchasing a plastic sprayer. The sprayer I recommend is the Chapin 1 Gallon Sprayer (see the current price on do my own).

Now that we have narrowed down what you will use to apply your pesticide I will share the chemical that works best to eliminate mosquitoes.

In my opinion the best option for treating mosquitoes is Talstar P (see the current price on do my own).  Talstar P lasts up to 30 days and will give you superior protection against adult mosquito populations.

During the Spring and Summer months, you will need to apply this chemical once a month on all trees and bushes around your property. Treat any fallen trees, burn piles, firewood, rotten trees or hollowed-out wood as well.

My customers rave over the mosquito service I provide and you can have the same results as well.

You will need to some safety items to perform this service:

  1. Rubber or Nitrile Gloves
  2. Paper Mask
  3. Long Sleeve Shirt Or Jacket
  4. Goggles or Safety Glasses

*Make sure to get these keys items because you will need the element of protection when applying pesticides.

Check Out The Safety Items I recommend (go to my recommended products page).

Here are my personal cautions I think you should adhere to.

Make Sure To Avoid These Areas When Spraying:

  • Pools
  • Lakes
  • Creeks
  • Bird Baths
  • Puddles
  • Pet Water Bowls
  • Koi Ponds
  • Drains
  • Man Holes
  • Sewers
  • Ponds (in general)
  • Flowering Bushes, Trees, and Shrubs (only when in bloom)
  • Nuts That Grow On Trees or Bushes
  • Fruit Trees, Bushes, Or Vines

Because spraying some of these are illegal and some will disrupt certain eco-systems you will want to avoid using Talstar P on them.

Be Sure To Read All Labeling And Abide By All Local And Federal Laws.

Now that the legal stuff is out of the way, there is a way to treat bodies of water that is safe. The pellets I recommend and use a lot is called Altosid (see the current price on do my own).

I use Altosid during mosquito season every year and I get the best results when I use it along with my normal application. Altosid is a pellet that kills mosquito larvae before it starts. You will only ever need 1 canister because a single canister of it will treat over 9,600 gallons of water.

Just a few pinches of pellets will treat an entire swimming pool. Just put a few tiny pellets in a birdbath and you are good to go. Don’t worry about your koi fish when using this product in tanks or ponds, it won’t stress or harm them in any way.

Summary

So in short mosquitoes don’t come up through drains, they may lay eggs in one if it hasn’t been used in a while. You can get rid of mosquitoes yourself with a little chemical. Make sure that you wear safety gear when performing your treatments. I hope you were able to learn more about mosquitoes and some of their habits.
